HICD

HICD (Hole in Case Dummy) items are inert cartridges intentionally manufactured or modified with a drilled case wall to clearly indicate non-functional status. This visual feature allows immediate identification as a dummy round while preserving the original external form, dimensions, and markings of the cartridge design. Examples span military, commercial, and experimental formats, often corresponding to specific calibers, loading concepts, or developmental programs.

These cartridges were commonly used for training, display, engineering reference, and handling demonstrations where live ammunition would be inappropriate. Variations include different case materials, projectile types, headstamps, and hole placement, reflecting the standards or practices of the issuing manufacturer or organization.

For collectors, HICD rounds offer a practical way to study cartridge construction, military patterns, and experimental configurations without safety concerns. They are particularly useful for comparative displays, instructional collections, and reference sets documenting how specific cartridges were identified and managed in non-live form.
