WHISPER - SSK

Whisper / SSK cartridges represent a distinct family of wildcat rifle cartridges developed in the early 1990s by J.D. Jones of SSK Industries. Designed around efficient use of subsonic velocities with relatively heavy bullets, the Whisper concept emphasized accuracy, consistency, and compatibility with sound-suppressed firearms. Most Whisper cartridges are based on readily available parent cases such as .221 Fireball, .223 Remington, or 7mm BR, allowing straightforward case conversion while maintaining reliable feeding and bolt-face compatibility.

From a collector’s perspective, Whisper cartridges are significant because they document an important period in late-20th-century experimental cartridge development, when wildcat designers focused on suppressed performance rather than velocity alone. Variants such as 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, .300, .302, .375, and related “Micro” or cut-case forms illustrate both the flexibility of the Whisper concept and the small-batch nature of their production. Many examples were hand-loaded, experimentally headstamped, or produced in limited runs, making them especially relevant to collectors interested in wildcats, experimental ammunition, and the evolution of modern suppressed rifle cartridges.
